Whiplash
Treatment for Monmouth County Patients at Red Bank Chiropractic
Office
Whiplash
is the term used to describe the symptoms following an injury to
the soft tissues of the neck. This condition is caused by any abnormal
motion or force applied to the neck that causes movement not within
the normal range of motion.
Whiplash
is generally associated with auto
accidents, which are the leading cause of the condition. In
this case, whiplash usually occurs when an automobile is hit from
behind. It can also be caused by sports injuries or a blow to the
head from a falling object. In less acute cases, whiplash may be
attributed to repetitive stress injuries.
Symptoms
of whiplash may be apparent immediately following the initial injury,
or can take time to develop. When symptoms appear very quickly,
it is a sign that serious damage has occurred.
Whiplash
can be experienced as any of the following symptoms:
•
Pain in the neck or along the back of the neck
• Muscle spasms
• Swelling in the neck
• Shooting pains that travel from the neck down to the arms
or shoulders
• Headache
• An inability to move the neck
Whiplash
should be treated as soon as it is detected; to ignore the issue
may result in a chronic pain situation and lead to other health
concerns. Chronic pain is a more difficult condition to treat. If
whiplash is never properly addressed, it can ultimately lead to
surgery or, even worse, the effects of long term dependence on pain
medications.
Whiplash
and Chiropractic
Whiplash
can cause an abnormal curvature in the neck. When viewed from the
side, the neck should have a c-shaped curve between 40 and 60 degrees.
In a normal, healthy position, this cervical lordosis (neck curvature)
allows the spinal cord to remain soft and facilitates the flow of
blood and nerves to the rest of the body. With whiplash, the soft
tissues of the neck are damaged and the normal curve of the neck
is compromised.
Chiropractic
care for whiplash works to correct the cause of pain and other symptoms;
it is more than simply a treatment for the pain itself. Chiropractic
can increase joint and postural movement, and can help to reduce
pain and inflammation.
Chiropractic
treatment is centered on correcting misalignments of the spine (including
the cervical, or neck, spine). Studies have proven that chiropractic
care is an effective option for whiplash sufferers. One such study,
documented in the Journal of Orthopaedic Medicine, confirmed this
fact by discovering that 93% of study participants (whiplash patients)
benefited from chiropractic care.*
The
authors of the study delved further into the issue and interviewed
one hundred patients with chronic whiplash (a more difficult condition
to treat), and found that 74% of patients experienced an improvement
in chronic whiplash symptoms following chiropractic treatment.
Whiplash
Treatment at Monmouth Spine and Rehabilitation Center
The
Doctors of Chiropractic at Monmouth Spine and Rehabilitation Center
use a technique known as Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP). This chiropractic
method specializes in correcting abnormal spinal structure such
as the unhealthy neck curvature associated with whiplash. With CBP,
our facility focuses on the overall positioning of the spine in
order to address both the cause and symptoms of whiplash.
In
whiplash cases associated with auto accidents, New Jersey law ensures
that all auto insurance policies carry the personal injury protection
that extends to chiropractic care for whiplash. Please contact
our Red Bank rehabilitation center as soon as you have experienced
a traumatic event to learn more about how we can help.
